OUR PAST

Zeta Beta celebrated 50 years in 2021 on the campus of North Carolina State University in 2021. Since our founding in 1971, Zeta Beta has been a leader on campus and in the Greek community. Our members gain valuable leadership experience and develop lifelong friendships.

In 1968, a local group called Alpha Tau was formed on campus. In the spring of 1970, eight national organizations were considered for affiliation, with Alpha Delta Pi being selected. On August 30, 1970, Alpha Tau was pledged to become the Zeta Beta chapter of Alpha Delta Pi, with Dottie Rawls as the first chapter president.

The 1980s saw strong results in Derby Days and Greek Week competitions, Run-a-thon and Exercise-a-thon philanthropy events, visits to the Ronald McDonald House in Durham, Alumnae brunches before Homecoming, the chapter’s first Traveling Chapter Consultant (TCC) and a new deck added to the house.

In 1991, Zeta Beta won its first Golden Lion as it continued to excel with Panhellenic awards for campus involvement and community service. Three more TTCs were selected, three more Golden Lions were earned and the house saw major renovations.
In 1999, the chapter moved into the current house on Fraternity Court. The 2000s saw multiple awards for highest GPA, continued support of the Ronald McDonald House with Casino Nights and Pig Pickins. In 2011, the chapter and alumni celebrated Zeta Beta’s 40th anniversary with a weekend full of activities.

On February 19, 1971, Miss Maxine Blake, Grand President, presided over the installation of the Zeta Beta chapter. The weekend was full of festivities, including the initiation services for 27 women. The formal installation banquet was held at the Velvet Cloak Inn, with Chancellor John T. Caldwell welcoming Alpha Delta Pi to the campus.

For the first few years, the chapter met in a room in the old Student Union next to DH Hill Library and held parties and events in the Student Union, Faculty Club and other campus locations. A highlight was moving into a new house in 1976.

The Maxine Blake Golden Lion is the highest honor an Alpha Delta Pi chapter can be awarded. It recognizes chapters that meet the highest standards and are considered to exemplify Alpha Delta Pi’s ‘First and Finest’ reputation on their respective campuses. Zeta Beta won the Golden Lion for the first time in 1991. Since then, the chapter has won the much sought-after prize eight more times. Most recently, Zeta Beta won the Golden Lion in 2021 thanks to a dedicated executive board, chapter advisors, and members!
